AAA has been known for its road maps since the turn of the 20th century when the first rudimentary metropolitan area maps were created. In the 1900s, only the wealthy had automobiles and the roads were terrible; it was at this time that the American Automobile Association was founded to deal with issues such as listing areas where motorcars were restricted. We have come a long way since 1911 when our first maps were published and 1920 when the age of the automobile really took off!
